Verizon Wireless and Skype Launch Skype Mobile

US mobile users: if you’re a Verizon Wireless customer and you have a recent smartphone and data plan, I have good news for you: get ready to use Skype on your device!

On the 25th of March (that’s two days away), you’ll be able to download and use Skype mobile on your Blackberry or Android device from Verizon.  With the application, you’ll be able to:

  • make and take Skype-to-Skype calls from anyone on Skype, wherever in the world the other person may be.
  • Send Skype IMs to anyone on Skype
  • Call internationally using Skype’s cheap per-minute rates.

So, which Verizon phones will support Skype Mobile?  Here’s the list: BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm 2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition, Tour 9630; and Android devices including the Droid, Eris, and Devour.

One note for my more technical readers: the Skype voice calls will be routed over the traditional cellular network, not the data part.  This means calls will be clearer and can travel from tower to tower as you move around.  This is a key feature that will enhance voice quality.

On Thursday, I’ll try Skype Mobile on a Devour device and let you all know how it works.
