Truphone Offers Uber-Cheap Calling For Holidays

Truphone is a mobile-focused telephony company that operates on pretty much every mobile platform. In other words, Truphone lets you make very inexpensive calls on your mobile by using the Internet to route the calls.

Over Thanksgiving, the UK based company offered free calling and had a great response. To carry on the holiday cheer, Truphone is now offering a 50% calling discount to select destinations across the world.

As an added bonus, calling to these destinations on New Year’s Eve will be free!

So, basically, you can make a call to many places for a mere 2.6 cents per minute. Pretty sweet if you want to call your friends and family for an inexpensive price. For full details, check out truphone.com/christmas.

Truphone is available for download on Nokia, Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Android devices.

  1. I downloaded this app for the iPhone. It looks like they’re trying to combine multiple services into one app; WiFi calling, Twitter, IM, etc. This app looks okay but seems to be in line with others such as Fring.

My question is when will we be able to use the voice portions of these apps over the 3G network instead of only via WiFi. I thought I heard something regarding a court case with the FCC, AT&T and Skype, but I haven’t followed up.

    • right now, you can not use VoIP calling services on AT&T’s 3G network on an iPhone. However, you can use Truphone to make these calls on a Nokia handset on 3G (and Android) because Nokia hasn’t locked out the functionality.

      All Hail Steve Jobs.

AT&T has said they’re going to be VoIP friendly in a press release, but not details or implementation has come of it, yet.
