Nokia Unveils the N8 Touch Superphone

Nokia has had a rough run over the last 12-18 months.  The Nokia N97, the phone I continue to use every day, packs some interesting hardware features and the rock-solid Symbian S60 OS, but it’s a bit long in the tooth.  Other devices, such as the HTC Incredible and Motorola Droid have *really* caught my eye…but the N8 has me looking back to Nokia again.

What’s new with this phone?  First, it has a whopping 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, capable of taking HD (not sure what exact resolution) video.  The camera on the N97 is stellar at 5MP, so I can imagine that 12MP will absolutely rock.  Plus, like the popular N82,  the N8 returns the traditional xenon flash (the same type of flash found on any ‘normal digital camera’) for great night-time shots.

Moving on, the Nokia N8 will feature the brand new Symbian^3 OS which features 3 home screens, new photo and video editing, and some other new features.  Qt is baked in to the OS, making the N8 a fertile ground for app developers who want to code in Qt.

Finally, I must highlight that the specs on the N8 show it with a whopping FIVE 3G bands for data access.  This means that the N8 will work on both T-Mobile USA and AT&T for 3G, the first instance of this for ANY Nokia device.

Lets break down the other features:

Other specifications of the Nokia N8 include:

  • 3.5 inch 640×360 capacitive touchscreen display
  • Symbian^3 OS with Qt 4.6.2 support
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Internal 16GB memory and microSD card for up to 32GB more memory802.11 b/g/n WiFi
  • HDMI port
  • 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash and 720p video capture
  • Both a FM transmitter and a FM radio
  • Integrated GPS with free Ovi Maps navigation
  • 1200 mAh NON-REPLACEABLE battery (seems a bit low for this device)
  • 5 colors in aluminum casing
  • Dimensions: 4.47 x 2.32 x 0.51 inches and 4.76 ounces

Yes, the iPhone is coming out before the N8 and will likely drown out the N8 in the press, but this device will be available at a great price of just over $400….unlocked!  At that price, it competes with many digital cameras.
